Transcribing the Delphi Trial

In the event cameras are not allowed in the courtroom at the upcoming Delphi murders trial, using shorthand transcripts could act as a safety net.

Since January, I have been enrolled in a shorthand class, learning a pen-and-paper technique for recording the spoken word. This serves as a precaution in case cameras are not allowed in the courtroom for the Delphi trial.

My goal is to attend and transcribe the trial (and possibly pre-trial hearings of importance), publicly releasing the notes daily.

To accomplish this, I will need assistance, including volunteers I can send the notes to for prep/upload.

This is a placeholder page. In the coming days I will update this with detailed information.

Thank you so much!

[CLIP: Good Morning America Delphi Murders Video – Police Warning to Killer]

[BEGIN GOOD MORNING AMERICA DELPHI MURDERS TRANSCRIPT]

MICHAEL STRAHAN: With the latest on the Delphi murder case, nearly five years after the killing of two Indiana teenage girls, police say they may be closing in on the killer. Amy is here with the latest on the investigation and what the families are saying now. Good morning, Amy.

AMY ROBACH:  And good morning to you, Michael. This is the murder case of two young girls who managed to record the suspect with a phone. But five years later, he has still not been caught. While the case remains unsolved, Indiana State Police say they still receive 25 to 30 tips a week from all over the world, and they say this case is far from cold.

[NARRATION] Nearly five years since 13-year-old Abby Williams and 14-year-old Libby German were murdered on this Indiana hiking trail, their killer still at large. And this morning, Indiana State Police issuing a new warning to the culprit.

DOUG CARTER [SUPERINTENDENT, INDIANA STATE POLICE]: My resolve to catch him is as strong now as it was day one. But the difference now – between now and day one – is we know about you. A lot about you. Today …

Dr. Oz Delphi Murders Video: Robert Ives Transcript

Dr. Oz Delphi Murders Show Interview with Robert Ives Transcript (Carroll County Prosecutor)

In February 2021, former Carroll County Prosecutor Robert Ives appeared on The Dr. Oz Show to discuss the Delphi Murders. Though the interview was brief, Ives again mentioned the “three or four signatures” left by the killer and described the crime scene as “very unusual”.

Below is the video of the show, as well as a transcript of Robert Ives’ interview.

[Begin Robert Ives Dr. Oz Show Transcript]

DR. OZ: Let me bring in Robert Ives who was the Chief Prosecutor in Carroll County, Indiana at the time of these murders, and who can shed a little light in how unique this crime scene was. Thank you for being here, sir. The girls’ cause of death is still protected, which I understand, but what can you tell us about the actual crime scene, with what you’re allowed to share? Could this have been the work of a serial killer?

ROBERT IVES: Well, I think like most people because the trail is not well known… it’s not a big tourist spot, and because the bridge itself is something you wouldn’t cross unless you were familiar with the area. The bridge was abandoned 30 years ago, and when you see the person walking across with his head down, it’s because it’s not safe to cross that bridge. The bridge was not part of the trail. The trail terminated at the bridge. And so most people I believe, and most people law enforcement thought “It must be a local person” because why would anybody be there? Why would you be familiar with that trail? But on the other hand, the crime is so… it’s impossible to think of a motivation for the crime. Generally [in the past] when you have a murder in rural Indiana, this is Carroll County, the motive was …

HLN ‘Down The Hill’ Transcript: Who Killed Abby & Libby?

HLN Down the Hill Delphi Murders Transcript. New information from roundtable discussion includes a high school witness saw BG suspect and Libby's video length. This is a picture of the video's participants (Barbara MacDonald, Drew Iden, Casey Jordan, Mike Galanos)

KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM HLN ‘DOWN THE HILL’ INTERVIEW:

  • A female high school student on the trails prior to Abby and Libby’s arrival may have spoken to the suspect known as ‘Bridge Guy’.
  • Unreleased portion of Libby’s video is short & does NOT contain additional audio or video of the killer.
  • Criminologist does not believe killer knew the girls and agrees with investigators that he is local & follows the case.
  • Contrary to social media speculation, there is no indication that police have narrowed in on a specific person of interest & still hope for ‘the’ tip.

To accompany HLN Down The Hill – The Delphi Murders television special, viewers were encouraged to submit questions about the case which were answered during a round table discussion on YouTube.

True Crime Live host Mike Galanos sat down with HLN documentary producers Barbara MacDonald and Drew Iden, along with criminologist Dr. Casey Jordan, to respond to viewer’s queries and share their insight into the Delphi Murder investigation.

In an ongoing effort to document interviews and newsworthy material related to the unsolved Delphi Murders, we have transcribed the panel discussion (titled Who Killed Abby and Libby? HLN Investigates Your Questions about “Down the Hill) below.

Viewer questions will be highlighted in yellow. There are some interesting bits of information included within the discussion. Over the past year and a half, Barbara MacDonald and Drew Iden have been dedicated to investigating the Delphi Murders case (including spending time on the ground in Delphi for the “Down the Hill Podcast” / two-part documentary), and have developed solid relationships with both family and police.

While reading the transcript, you can follow along by watching the Q&A on Youtube here: Who Killed Abby and Libby? HLN Investigates Your Questions about ‘Down the Hill’.

Delphi Murders 3 Signatures: Robert Ives Interview Transcript from ‘Down the Hill’ Podcast

Robert Ives Signatures at Delphi Murders Crime Scene as told on Down the Hill Podcast (Robert Ives Transcript Interview)

Prosecutor Robert Ives details Delphi murders, crime scene, and signatures in interview with ‘Down The Hill’ Podcast.

Robert Ives was Carroll County, Indiana’s Chief Prosecutor when the Delphi Murders occurred. Now retired, Ives gave a fascinating interview to HLN’s ‘Down The Hill’ Podcast, providing an overview of the investigatory process, where he discussed everything from the legalities of securing search warrants and cell data, to Libby’s video, and even possible signatures left at the crime scene.

As part of an ongoing effort to document facts and interviews of significance relating to the Delphi Murders, the relevant portions of the episode has been transcribed below. Please be sure to listen to Down the Hill Podcast – Chapter 5: Signatures as you read along. The entire show is phenomenal and well-produced. Ives comes across as smart and well-spoken, and in this interview, he supplies some of the best insight into the inner workings of the case to date.

[Begin Robert Ives Interview Transcript / Down The Hill Podcast]

NARRATOR: From Ives’ perspective, crime scenes in Carroll County are generally routine. He says it’s usually pretty clear from the jump who did what… but that’s not the case here.

BARBARA [HOST]: You were quoted as saying that the evidence, or the crime scene, was “odd”. What do you mean by odd?

ROBERT IVES: Well, in one sense, any murder scene is probably odd. But again this is where I have difficulty because I’m not sure what all has been released. There were a variety of things at the scene of the crime where I guess I would ask you to talk to the State Police about that. They have to decide what’s going to be released was not going to be released. It was just not your normal ‘a person was killed …

Delphi Murders Audio File- Do YOU Recognize This Voice?

Delphi Murders Audio File 2019 New Sketch Suspect

During the April 2019 press conference, Indiana State Police released a new sketch & Delphi Murders audio file of the suspect speaking. He appears to authoritatively instruct the girls “Guys, down the hill”. Police are asking for the public’s help- do YOU recognize this voice? Listen to the Delphi Murders audio file below:

Delphi Murders Audio File: Suspect’s Voice [2019 Release]

The audio was recorded by Libby German on her cell phone. This remarkable young woman had the foresight to record both video & audio of the man responsible for the death or her and friend Abby Williams.

In addition to the release of the Delphi Murders audio file, a new police sketch of the suspect was released. Investigators have instructed the public to disregard the previous well known sketch commonly referred to as “Bridge Guy” (which appeared to be a middle aged man wearing a cap), as the individual depicted is no longer a suspect. Additionally they are asking the public to stop sharing the old sketch on social media, and not to compare the two. The new sketch – and the new sketch only- should be the only focus going forward. While the man appears to have a youthful appearance, police say he may actually “fall in the age range from his 20’s to late 30’s”. State police said that the Delphi community should reflect back on people they know in the community that look similar to the [new] sketch released on April 22, 2019, especially if that person has changed their appearance since the murders occurred in February 2017″. He is believed to be local to the Delphi, Indiana community. Tips should be emailed to abbyandlibbytip@cacoshrf.com .

SUPERINTENDENT CARTER: I wasn’t sure quite what to expect when I walked out, but I got to say to the Delphi Community, um, I got to say to the Delphi Community how grateful I am. You inspire people you don’t even understand when, you don’t even understand why. Information is being released today is the result of literally thousands and thousands of hours of extraordinary investigative efforts by Delphi, Carroll County, The FBI, The Indiana State Police and countless other agencies. This community surrounded us some 26 months ago. And you did everything you could to support us, but most importantly you surrounded the family of these two little girls. Gosh, I’ll never forget it! After you hear what we’re going to release today I’m going to ask for your continued support, your continued understanding, your empathy and compassion as we move forward to find out who did this….and we will. We’re seeking the public’s help to identify the driver of a vehicle that was parked at the old CPS/DCS welfare building in the city of Delphi that was abandoned on the east side of County …
